  • This is one of series 1 plush toys, of course, the main character is the trash-talking, booze-guzzling robot, Bender. The while plush toy measures approximately 11 inches tall, as we can see from the image, the plush toy features Bender’s iconic characteristics and same color scheme as the original one’s in the hit animated series, but the squatty Bender looks much more cuter.

The Matchbox Robotech product comes in a bright box with a panel that opens to a window showing the toy within which is exceptionally nice considering the era. Inside, the toy sits in a Styrofoam tray with inserts and stickers provided but nothing really in the way of extras. The Takatoku version has an exceptionally nice box as well. Rather than having a box with a collector’s style flap that opens to reveal a window, Takatoku used two separate lids. The first lid is the typical texture-finished cardboard with beautiful artwork, the second lid underneath features windows that show off the toy inside. Due to more lax child-safety laws in Japan, the Japanese version comes with some pretty nifty projectiles to accompany the inserts. Some of the projectiles are shaped like planes that can be launched from the two aircraft carrier arms. A picture of said projectiles is provided below. Two different Takatoku SDF-1 toys were used for this review (a super minty pristine white one and a yellowed one) and both came with different colored projectiles. Projectiles may be any variation of blue, red, or green. The Takatoku also includes stickers (two sheets), instructions, and a Takatoku toy catalog.

Charm & Collectibality (4/5) MB, (4.5/5) TT
Obviously the Takatoku version is more collectible since it comes with the launching gimmicks and better detail in the form of some pre-applied stickers. Being the only truly perfect variable SDF-1 toys (television version) on the market both of these toys have remained quite collectible. Many people would much prefer to have a harder to find valkyrie toy over the SDF-1 itself though so neither one hit quite a perfect score here. If you’re wondering why no current company has managed to put a TV version SDF-1 toy together yet it is likely reflected here. While people have been willing to spend insane quantities of money on the transformable planes it seems they begin to balk when it comes to other products like the Macross itself. Don’t have a box and you’re not sure what version of the SDF-1 toy you have? The quickest way to check is to look at the feet. The Matchbox version is made by Bandai, obviously the Takatoku version has the Takatoku maker’s mark. Does yours not show either manufacturer or it has clearly been drilled off the toy? Then you must have a knock off like one of the ones pictured below. Note, knock off pictures are stolen from eBay auctions over the years –
