  • Do note (as per my long-winded other post) - this lens the 14-42 II - it's the original 14-42, launched between the 14-45 and the 14-42 II (aka the HS-F1442A), which is new and has only been manufactured in 2013.

    Yes indeed - I'm afraid axolotl has clearly muddled up the original 14-42 (H-FS014042) (which was the low-cost replacement for the 14-45 when supplied in kits, though it is also available separately) with the new 14-42II (H-FS1442A). The description gives it away, as the original 14-42 looks quite similar to the 14-45 and like it, is shortest at its 14mm setting, but is actually a shade longer than the 14-45 at this setting (it also has a plastic mount in place of the 14-45's metal mount, no OIS switch, and the zoom ring is plastic like the focus ring, rather than rubber-clad). The original 14-42 has had a couple of light cosmetic revamps during its time (such as the addition of a silver trim band on its midriff and the availability of all black main barrel, and was then joined by a paler version for use on white camera bodies) but the new 14-42 II lens is (and looks) utterly different - it is much smaller, has a shiny, milled metallic main barrel finish, weighs much less, has a 46mm lens cap/filter ring (vs 52mm), extends both far less (and differently), performs and handles better (the focusing motor is quieter still, the zoom ring is less "skippy" and turns butter-smooth with little noise [my original 14-42 examples all rustle]) and so on. When in doubt whilst viewing product shots, to identify the new lens, look out for the 46mm diameter marking on the name ring, the lens name being printed the same way up as the word Lumix on the name ring (i.e. with Lumix up top, the rest of the name spec at the bottom is oriented the same way, with the bottom of the lettering pointing downwards - on the earlier lenses this wording is upside-down compared with the Lumix wording) and the presence of the HD logo on the rear of the barrel (in red on the black version, black on the silver one).


  • Slight vignetting could be seen throughout the zoom range. It was more noticeable at the 14mm and 42mm focal lengths than the middle of the range. The darkening is not enough to create problems in regular shots and it's easily correctable with in-camera settings or post-capture editing.

    Immediately behind the focusing ring and separated by a thin blue band is the zoom ring, which is about 7 mm wide and textured with four narrow bands of fine ridging, which encircle the ring. Rotating this ring to the left zooms in from 14mm to 42mm, while turning it to the right zooms out again.
