  • Metal cans and soft drink bottles take up a lot of space in landfills, but they don't have to. Paint or otherwise decorate metal cans, and then punch a few holes in the bottom for drainage and you'll have all the flowerpots you could ever want without spending a dime. You can also make a garden tool caddy by fastening the painted cans to a scrap board and adding a handle. Put in your labels, seed packets and trowels, and go. Old soda bottles cut in half make excellent mini-terrariums or seed starters when you put soil in the bottom half and use the top as a lid. Make another quaint “container” for plants from an old shoe organizer. Fill each pocket with soil for an individual planter and hang it on a wall or fence.
