Sony ups the ante when it comes to read and write speeds in memory cards with their new Memory Stick PRO-HG Duo HX, which will come in 8GB, 16GB and 32GB capacities. Their impressive storage space is not what caught our attention – it is the 50MB/s data transfer rate during tests by Sony that made us drop everything we were doing and scrutinize it further. This is more than a decent jump from its predecessor, and it ought to keep those Memory Stick reliant gizmos working happily at least for a little while more, considering the fact that SD (Secure Digital) is more or less the de facto standard when it comes to memory cards these days. Heck, even Sony has relented in the past years to include SD memory card slots into their devices which were once Memory Stick only.

  • You: Hi, Max. This past year I bought a SONY PCG-GRX570 laptop and a SONY DSC-P9 digital camera with the understanding that SONY was developing memory sticks with 2 GB capacity. Are the new Memory Stick Pro sticks going to be compatible with these expensive items?

Sony has announced the launch of the new Memory Stick PRO-HG Duo HX. It features enhanced storage capacity of upto 16 GB with fast read/write speeds and a free USB adapter.

  • In general you should always format a new memory stick before using it in the PSP. Sony memory sticks are used in many Sony devices including cameras, music players, and mobile phones. These devices do not necessarily use the same format, and the memory stick is not sold for any device in particular. It is intended that you format a memory stick in the PSP, before it is used for PSP storage. If you don't, you can't be sure that it has the correct formatting for the PSP. The PSP has a format function for a reason, and it isn't just for third-party memory sticks.

Sony’s new Mirroring Memory Stick™ (16, 32, and 64 GB capacities), which has professional dual-recording back-up features, can also be used. The new cards are designed to deliver high reliability and data security through a dual recording (mirroring) function, and are recommended for use with Sony NXCAM camcorders, including the new NEX-EA50UH model.
