SANTA CRUZ >> Some 97 years after its founding, the Santa Cruz Adult School has merged with neighboring Watsonville/Aptos Adult School, creating a regional program supporting continuing education under the Pajaro Valley Unified School District.
The program, founded in 1928 as an evening school, is expected to enfold some 500 Santa Cruz students into its approximately 3,500 student base, Bilicich said. Santa Cruz City Schools previously managed the Santa Cruz Adult School. City Schools Superintendent Kris Munro, who sits on countywide adult education governance team, said, “It is not about who owns it,” when it comes to programming.
Under a memorandum of understanding between City Schools and Pajaro Valley Unified, the Santa Cruz Adult Education program will bring with it seven full-time teachers, about 20 temporary teachers and most of the state funding controlled under the Adult Education Block Grant. Santa Cruz teachers will switch their employment to the Pajaro Valley Unified School District under similar, if not improved, compensation terms, Bilicich said.
In May, Santa Cruz City Schools threw something of a going away party at its board meeting, serving cake and offering congratulations for the efforts of its adult school teachers. Molly Parks, district human resources assistant superintendent, told those gathered that at its height, Santa Cruz Adult School annually served about 10,000 students from about 35 different areas around the community, with 80 teachers and 10 staff members.
